Thoughts on the Lead and Coal traffic:
"traffic signals which are designed to turn red immediately if they sense that oncoming traffic is traveling at speeds over the posted limit."
This seems dangerous, there is a problem with folks running the lights as it is. I don't see this as a solution other than to exacerbate that particular issue and cause more accidents. It seems more ill conceived than the ART project which is forcing more drivers on to these roads in the first place.We don't have the $ in the budget ...... that sounds familiar (ART). However, we will spend it anyway?
City/traffic engineers seem to design the timing of these lights to allow traffic to flow freely at certain speeds.If you start driving from a red light on lead, you will hit all the green lights if you go 30mph (try it, it works this way). If you are driving on Coal, you will hit every green light if you go 35mph (again, try it, it works). You may be stopped at a select few red lights (probably timed by the engineers for other safety concerns).
Here is a thought, potentially cheaper, potentially could solve the problem. Educate the drivers using these roads. Do this with signage. "All lights timed for 30mph" OR "you will have all green lights if you travel 30MPH) 1 to 2 words per sign placed 20-30 yards apart or whatever the engineers say is appropriate. It's like a permanent PSA telling us what will work. Examples of this can be seen on freeways (written on the road itself or on signage) about merging traffic, exit ramps, directions, what-have-you.

Turning lights red at the drop of a hat seems reckless and in my view will only cause the speeders to accelerate and run the red light causing a far, far, far more dangerous situation. This is not a sexy, slick, technological solution that the newer generations run to. It is however, a tried and true solution that may have a larger impact on consciousness of the drivers using these roads. Be honest and transparent with commuters and go out of our way to communicate how these corridors work and how to predictably use them rather than taking a punitive stance with unexpected surprises at every intersection. When drivers are faced with the unexpected the situation becomes very dangerous. Think about this a little bit. The thought above may not be the solution but endangering the public by turning lights red unexpectedly to try to stop drivers who are already breaking the traffic laws and expecting them not to run the lights is short sighted and reckless. I do not see the fancy lights as a remotely responsible solution.

Hello Neighbors,

Greetings from the NHNA. I am writing as part of our Lead Coal Action Alliance initiative. 

Over the last year this new initiative of the Quality of Life Committee has been working to gather constructive and achievable goals to assist with traffic calming through the neighborhoods transected by the Lead/Coal arterial. As most of you are probably aware, those of us that live between, near or on these streets have been plagued by excessive speed, aggressive drivers and a higher than normal level of bad accidents.

As part of the initiative we have worked with Councilor Davis on becoming a pilot program for a new breed of intelligent ?rest in red? traffic signals which are designed to turn red immediately if they sense that oncoming traffic is traveling at speeds over the posted limit. Pat has set aside some funds for this project which is great news but the engineering firm on the job is still in fact-finding mode developing the system and it is estimated to exceed our district?s available funds by 2-3x.

Yes! I'm not familiar with these traffic lights. However, I believe that use of traffic lights to restrict speeds is appropriate.  As it is now, the spacing of the lights allow speeders to accelrate between them in their attempt to beat the lights.  Often, the lights are not even synched.  My proposal has been to increase the number of lights, by a factor of 2 or 3 AND to assure that they are synched all the way from 14th up to Wyoming.

I live on the north side of Central but often find myself driving on Lead or Coal to go into or return from town. Both streets always have the feeling of being  raceways with drivers weaving in and out or accelerating trying to beat the lights. I?m certainly glad I don?t live on or near them. I?m not sure what the answer is BUT something should be done to control the traffic there. Attention must be paid!        Anthony Hunt
