Bob,
I fully agree with you. There is not much for kids to do in this community.
Even the neighborhood schools have fully fenced off their playgrounds now,
and even though I understand what motivated this action, it's not clear
where the kids are supposed to go. When we think of vacant premises on
Central, we as a neighborhood appear to be interested only in pursuing
businesses. What if we started thinking in a different direction? Can we do
something other than food and alcohol? (Retail is dying, so I am not even
going to worry about it.) Does everything have to be for profit? Yes, I
understand that those who lease are interested in making money. But can we
at least start talking about communal interests that lie outside of
business interests?

I keep hoping we will see on the list some talk of a community center being
planned here that would focus on the needs of our seniors and the youth
especially. We don’t even have a community meeting center, a pool or
anything like that. A skateboard site would be good. I see appeals for
more venues for alcohol and drug outlets and with the cannabis legalization
people who want to make drug profits off our neighborhood are coming. My
underage teens tell me people are approaching them on the street to try
these drugs. And we even have war profiteers boldly opening a store front
on Central to promote more destructive ideas and weapons to kill with. As
a Vietnam war veteran I find this very troubling and would like to see my
neighborhood go in a different direction.
In community,
Bob Anderson
