(The issue in my neighborhood could have been as simple as a driver speeding through the neighborhood who happened to get a traffic ticket.  However, the fact that the Crime Scene Mobile Unit was nearby on MorningSide next to Carlisle made me think the issue may have been greater than just a speeding ticket or those 2 could be 2 unrelated incidents.  I live on the block of Chula Vista by the way in Nob Hill in the NE.

Bob, the air siren was UNM testing it's alert system. They do it every six months or a year.

and I'd like to ask if there's some way to know what happened (already over) and where.

Was it Friday night? Sounded like gunfire not far from my place, west of Carlisle .... but I don't know how far away. About two rounds of rounds (so 5 to 10 shots) and a very loud, lasting boom. Within minutes, sirens aloud, sounding urgent and seemed to be moving further west as they traveled.

If nothing else, it would be nice to hear back if anyone else heard it - it was 12:30 am.

If it's that interesting or threatening, you could invest in a scanning radio, but even then, the communications you'll hear are technical, coded, and cryptic. Best approach? This concern of Dan is one that many have that the city needs urgently to address.
How do we find out in real and relevant time what is going on when we see police activity in and above (helicopters and planes) our homes and neighborhood?  Or how do we follow up a specific event? Usually we know and learn nothing of significant police/criminal activity near us that we should be aware, even as it is occurring. For example, last Tuesday the air alert siren sounded for about 15 minutes in the morning of something but there was no way to find out what was the problem or where. I drove past because I needed to be at a meeting.  This was on the Chula Vista Block NE between Marquette and Ridley.  I did not have any cards or notices on my door so I think I am in the clear.  It was near 334 Chula Vista Place N.E.  I saw 1 White Police Car and I think there was a lady officer.  Did something serious happen on our block?
