[Neighbors] Trees Need More Care

Hi all,
A couple ideas to add ~
A soaker hose, drip system or drip line can deliver a steady, slow flow
of water that can go through the fabric (nothing would go through
plastic - never put plastic where you want anything to grow!). I've been
using a drip system for my trees and shrubs that have fabric around them
for years ~ I run the system for 2 or 3 hours once a week (every 5 days
when the temps go above 90) and, according to Baca's, my trees are quite
happy. These are established trees.
Sharing this to show that water will go through fabric if it is
delivered slowly enough - and you let that drip go long enough to go
down into the ground. Also, any drip line, etc. will enhance one's
ability and "will" for regular watering. Moving a hose multiple times,
three times a week is a lot of work (and way more run off)!
I use a compost thermometer to check water depth on the trees I have
that do not have fabric around them. I originally bought it to use as a
compost thermometer, but it works so well for water depth! I push it in
as far as it will go (not pushing on the thermometer, of course, just
holding the metal) and measure when I pull it out. Any long metal rod,
with a very small diameter and a point on the end would work :)
