Thank you Mike for writing this. I also agree with you.
I also commend you for posting an opinion that we do not hear very often in this group. I am quite often dismayed by the virtue signaling that I hear in this group regarding the homeless.
I, unfortunately, live near Morningside Park. The park is frequently over-run with homeless people. They use the park as a toilet, they use drugs while hanging out at the park, they leave their trash all over the park. I have even seen fights break out among them, with one individual being severely beaten.
I have woken up in the morning to see on my cameras that a homeless man slept the night on my front patio. He destroyed the cushions on my furniture and left cigarette butts all over my patio. I have seen on my cameras homeless people steal things from my front patio and someone even tried to break in my front door.
So I definitely do not support efforts to make our neigborhood hospitable in any way for the homeless.
Thank you,
Susan

I've worked with and around homeless for years. There are more than a few who are more than happy to be right where they are. How do I know? I've tried to coax them into being helped and they simply don't want it. It's terribly sad but the way it is for many of them.

>
> Not all of us want to encourage a Nob Hill overrun with homeless people near our homes and businesses where more shops close, more homes don't sell, more small businesses do not come because the crime is so bad so no one goes to their store or restaurant? How about when you're going out to dinner at a great place like Mesa Provisions and a screaming maniac is on Carlisle and Central and everyone and a couple with children had to carefully walk around him. You want more of that? We already have some crappy RV's parking in our neighborhood and more than a few tents. I feel like some of you don't have friends in Portland, Oakland or Denver. I feel like some of you are not media savvy and not watching the stories of good people who love their homes (and poured their life savings into it) and are having the home and quality of life ruined by homeless encampments near them. Our poor friends in the International District will tell you, the city let them be overrun and now good luck selling your home if you want to get away from the crazy. They are stuck down there and I feel terrible for them.
>
> We support raising our taxes to help people who don't have homes. We support housing those who want it in a building NOT near a residential area or an area with small businesses (think barracks, one for men one for women). Just letting them sit on the deck of Ihatov with their naked dirty ass out (about a month ago), is not what this neighborhood needs. Compassion can also come with personal responsibility and making sure that the quality of life for the good people of Albuquerque does not get ruined by letting homeless do whatever they please in our beautiful neighborhood, especially if we offer help and they do not want it.
