[Neighbors] Report on Urban Land Institute Event

Thanks, friends and neighbors who contributed to this thread. The thoughtful dialogue has been productive.

We shared the main ideas we would be presenting on your behalf before the event. We got feedback from a couple members; namely that, although we have had dangerous events at a couple night clubs, please don't demonize them just because of what they're called.

Here’s what happened at the Urban Land Institute event. The panel was remarkably tuned in to concerns we planned to discuss. Hilleño Jim Strozier was on the panel and he went over the points we had made in our email to the email list. Other panelists showed much sensitivity about safety. Kate Gerwin from Happy Accidents discussed conceiving a business with a safety focus and managing assertively to prevent violence. The panel was highly focused on the value of Nob Hill's historic sense of place; the best in ABQ they said.

Members of your board spoke, starting with our appreciation for NH Main Street, saying we collaborate a lot. We said we want a commercial district where we can take our families safely at any time. We appreciate the idea that a well-managed business can be a safe place. We like to eat and drink but we also prize retail and services; a mix. We prize the district's sense of place, its historic character.

Event participants discussed the boutique hotel project at the Hiway House site, saying it should be complete in about 2 years. They plan to use part of the site under the hotel as parking. There was additional discussion of parking, unhoused individuals in the commercial district, and the lack of activities in the evening. Nob Hill Main Street and Nob Hill Neighborhood Association emphasized our ongoing cooperation on public safety.

After reading my post, I feel like I could have been clearer. And promise, I'm not trying to overcomplicate things and it's not just specific to this mtg, I feel it's worth continuing the dialogue. And promise, I won't bring it up again.

The Google machine says a nightclub is an establishment for evening entertainment. Often open late, it serves liquor and usually food. It offers live music, comedy acts, a floor show, or dancing. That's at least 4 places I can think of without looking (Tractor, Smokey Note, Lobo, Oak and Ivy) Calling Imbibe a nightclub and using the incident there in a way that might discourage bars/restaurants from moving in, even if it's an unintended consequence.

We're all concerned with safety and in my opinion the focus no matter the business.

Thanks for reading

PS. I meant to say Gecko’s -which is next door to Scalo. The point is that in the heart of Nob Hill people gather for drinks.

Hi all,

I saw Scots concern over the negative connotation in another part of this thread. I appreciate that, but I support the notes written by Gary.

The concerns about nightclubs are based in our experiences with them (not just judging them because they are nightclubs).

Each part of town has something special to offer, to draw in people from all over the city. Those who want a nightclub vibe can find that in abundance downtown. Those who want a more family friendly vibe can find that here in Nob Hill.

I want to keep Nob Hill as its special self.

Thanks,

Karen

Friends and Neighbors.

The Urban Land Institute and Nob Hill Main Street are putting on this panel discussion Thursday.

They have invited the board of our association to participate.

We asked about opening it up to the public but they indicate it is an event for ULI and Nob Hill Main Street members.

Your board will carry the views of the neighborhood as we understand them.

-We are blessed for the commercial district walking distance to our houses.
-We like to eat and drink and we also prize retail and services; We prize businesses we can go to.
-We prize the district's sense of place, its historic character.
-We appreciate NH Main Street and we collaborate alot, like on public safety and events
-We are concerned about nightclubs. Two of the last nightclubs in Nob Hill closed after people died by gun violence. We want a safe area for our families.

If you want to have any particular view expressed please reply to all or to me.

We’ll report outcomes to you.
