Hello Neighbors,

Please help promote and preserve Nob Hill’s beautiful tree canopy by watering your trees in the winter months. New trees, especially, need regular watering in winter. Mature trees benefit from monthly watering as well. Click these links for more details about how (Everything You Need to Know About Effective Tree Watering <https://treenm.org/2023/07/06/everything-you-need-to-know-about-effective-tree-watering/>; Using drip lines for tree irrigation <https://www.505outside.com/2025/06/05/summer-irrigation-for-tree-health/>) and how often (Water by the Seasons <https://www.505outside.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/WBTS-_all4_Final_OL_for-PRINT_7_5-x-6.pdf>) to water your trees.

Information about tree watering and care can be found on the Nob Hill Neighborhood Association - Tree Canopy Restoration Committee webpage <https://www.nobhill-nm.com/tree-canopy-restoration/>.

Interested in rain watering harvesting for your trees and other garden plants? Click these links: Field Guide to Passive Rainwater Harvesting <https://www.bernco.gov/public-works/wp-content/uploads/sites/76/2023/05/Passive-Rainwater-Harvesting-Guide_webLR.pdf>, Tree New Mexico: Rainwater Harvesting <https://treenm.org/rainwater-harvesting-2/>. Or sign up for the Nob Hill Rainwater Harvesting Hands-on Workshop. Details are in the attached flyer.

Do you have stakes on your trees? This may be a good time to remove them. According to Tree New Mexico, most trees do not need to be staked. When stakes are left in place too long they cause growth delays and, ultimately, tree death. When young trees are allowed movement, they develop greater trunk girth and stronger root systems. If you must stake a tree (e.g., if your tree is a “whip” - a heavy top on a scrawny trunk) please follow these best practices <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cfai1gZzYh0> and be sure to remove the stake after one year at most.

Thanks for helping to promote and preserve Nob Hill’s Tree canopy!

Terri DeBacker and the NHNA Tree Canopy Restoration Committee
