Here's yesterday's screen shot taken from the Weather Underground app on my iPad mini. The black marks the relative presence of smoke and haze over (as you can see) much more than just the western states.  The bright yellow spots are active fires. And, yes, it curls around into NM and reaches back into Albuquerque. This map changes depending on wind and weather fronts but it's been this way for many days. A few weeks back (just before the time of the solar eclipse) my wife and I made a driving trip to Seattle (via UT, ID, OR, and WA) and back (via the Bay Area in California) ... north of Salt Lake City we had haze in the air all the way to Seattle ... never did see Mt. Rainier or several other prominent mountain tops although we did have good visibility on the Washington and Oregon coastline (that visibility has now disappeared).
