Halloween Safety Tips for Your Kids, Your Pets and You!
· Watch for kids trick-or-treating in your neighborhood! Slow down if you’re driving, and keep an eye out for little ghosts and goblins.
· If your children are trick-or-treating, make sure they do so in trusted neighborhoods and with trusted neighbors, and that their costumes are reflective, well-fitting, and if seasonally appropriate, warm.
· Make sure your trick-or-treaters use sidewalks at all times, remind them not to cut across yards or through alleyways, and always cross the street at a crosswalk if possible.
· If you have any doubts about the candy your kids get in their treat bags, throw it out. Discard candy that is unwrapped or has loose wrappings, has puncture holes, is homemade or not factory-wrapped.
· Keep the treats away from your pets! Chocolate is deadly for dogs, and sugar can cause other health issues. Hard candies can cause choking in your pets, too.
· If you’re expecting trick-or-treaters at your house, make sure your pets are safe in another room, or crated, so they don’t run out when you open the door, or get frightened by unexpected noises.
· Keep your dog at home on Halloween. Costumes, masks and unfamiliar surroundings and noises can frighten them and they may escape.
· Make sure your dog is microchipped, and if you do take him or her out, ensure they have a current pet ID tag and are leashed at all times.
· Vandalism often increases during Halloween, so lock your car and home, set your alarms if you have them, and keep your home well-lit.

ONC Neighborhood Toolbox Offers Resources to Combat Online and E-mail Scams
A neighborhood association recently experienced an identity theft attempt, with the attempt made using a fraudulent e-mail address that looked legitimate. The Office of Neighborhood strongly encourages all neighborhoods to make certain any requests for money or credit card transactions are verified to be legitimate. We’ve worked with the Albuquerque Police Department and the District Attorney’s Office to put together ideas and suggestions for helping prevent identity theft and e-mail scams for neighborhoods. Visit our online Toolbox at: www.cabq.gov/office-of-neighborhood-coordination/neighborhood-toolbox and learn how to protect yourself and your association!
