Right now, UNM is going through the second largest capital project outlay that we have had in our history - meaning that we are currently making a substantial investment to acquire, construct, repair, and upgrade our unique and beautiful campus.

Find out about UNM Planning, Design & Construction's current, future and proposed construction projects across the University of New Mexico.

Physics & Astronomy Interdisciplinary Science Building (PAÍS)
Since the official ground breaking in the winter of 2017, great progress has been made in the construction of the new Physics & Astronomy Interdisciplinary Science (PAÍS) facility located on UNM's main campus (north of Central Avenue on the north side of Redondo Drive).

When the facility begins occupancy in Fall 2019, PAÍS will be a state-of-the-art iconic facility serving as a hub of innovation and research while providing space for students, faculty and staff to collaborate on many of the leading interdisciplinary issues facing the world today. Its construction was made possible by General Obligation (GO) Bond money approved by New Mexico voters in 2016 and 2017 UNM bonds. The building is expected to be completed in the Fall of 2019.

The UNM Facilities Management Department (FM) is primarily responsible for the care and upkeep of over 12 million square feet of facilities and 680 acres of open space at the University of New Mexico.

Maintaining the physical environment on a campus this size requires a lot of planning and consistent diligence to protect and maintain the physical environment of the campus. Crews work year-round to provide a safe, beautiful, functional, and comfortable, clean and sustainable environment for the campus community.

Several mid-to-large scale maintenance projects will be underway in the coming months. Repair work is scheduled for the following areas: Student Family Housing, Elks Lodge, Reginald Herber Fits Hall, Clinical & Translational Science Center, the Innovation, Discovery and Training Complex, Dispute Resolution, The White House, and Redondo Drive.  Please note that the some of these projects are still in the planning stages and do not have exact construction dates yet.  For the most up-to-date information on projects that will impact campus buildings, landscape, and roadways please visit UNM Facilities Management’s "FM Projects" section of their main webpage.

University of New Mexico Hospital (UNMH) administrators are planning to address persistent capacity challenges by building a new tower onto the University of New Mexico Hospital. The New Hospital Tower project is currently in schematic design.  UNMH staff are participating in a series of 5 design workshops with HDR Architecture Inc. and FBT Architects. Planning is expected to take 12 to 18 months. Construction is currently estimated to start in 2020 and be completed in 2024.

For the most up-to-date information on UNM Health Science Center construction projects and events please visit the HSC Newsroom website.
UNM Parking & Transportation Services (PATS) operates on campus to provide reliable and orderly access to The University. In addition to managing UNM’s shuttle system and regulating parking at UNM, PATS is also responsible for maintaining the various parking lots and garages on campus.

Several parking areas are scheduled to undergo minor repair and maintenance work in the coming months (September-November). Repair work is scheduled for the following areas:

  • Parking spaces in the Lomas, Cornell, and Yale parking structures will be re-striped.
  • Crews will install a rumble strip on the 6th floor of the Yale structure to discourage vehicles from performing dangerous maneuvers.
  • Crews will continue to re-stripe fire lanes and parking lanes throughout campus
  • Maintenance work is scheduled for the M-Zone, Observatory lot to repair cracks in the asphalt.

Work will be performed in off-peak hours to minimize the impact to permit holders. Please note that the maintenance work is whether dependent, which may impact the project timing. For the most up-to-date information on projects that will impact parking, traffic, and transportation please visit UNM Parking & Transportation’s "Advisories" and "Announcements" sections of their main webpage or follow the department on social media (@UNMPATS on Facebook and Twitter).

UNM hosts hundreds of events throughout the year. When scheduled events are expected to attract a considerable amount of visitors, the UNM Parking & Transportation (PATS) office staff post high-traffic advisories on the pats.unm.edu website and social media pages in an effort to notify the community. During large events PATS staff work to alleviate congestion and ensure orderly traffic flow.

UNM's main campus is expected to experience high-traffic on September 19th due to the annual "Red Rally" event, which will be held on Johnson Field. Additionally, scheduled performances at Popejoy Hall will bring higher volumes of traffic, when the 2019-2020 season starts (October-June). The calendar of events for Popejoy Hall can be found at popejoypresents.com.
