September is National Preparedness Month! Have a Plan and Be Ready!

It’s National Preparedness Month, when everyone is strongly encouraged to prepare themselves, their families and pets, and their homes, for potential disasters. You never know where or when disaster might strike, and having a plan of action is the best way to make sure you’ll be ready.

  • Have an emergency plan in place. Know if you will shelter in your home, or meet in another location. Ensure everyone in your family knows and understands the plan, and practice it regularly.

  • Ensure you and your family always know how to get in touch with each other.

  • Remember that in an emergency, a text message may get through if a call does not, because texts require less bandwidth. So consider texting as an option for communication in an emergency.

  • Have a place you can all meet up if you’re apart when disaster strikes.

  • Make sure you know what emergency plans are in place at your children’s school, in the event of emergency, lockdown, or other disaster.

  • Have a 3-day supply of bottled water in your home or in your car if you must evacuate.

  • Keep an extra supply of medications, a first aid kit, glasses and contact lenses, personal hygiene items, and flashlights and extra batteries in your home or in a portable kit.

  • Remember your pets and have a contingency plan to keep them safe, evacuate them safely or transport them in the event you must leave your home.

  • Safeguard your family’s critical documents, such as titles and deeds, identification papers and cards, medical and insurance cards, military service information if applicable, and other financial, household and medical information. Either make copies and store them in a waterproof safe, store them with trusted family and friends who don’t live with you, or consider storing them in a bank safety deposit box.
