Hello Skiers,
On Sunday, December 1, Michael Arndt and I found the route of the old Twin Craters Trail on the west side of the Redondo Ski Touring Area and installed blue diamonds in both directions.
Photos of the tour are presented in the attached Word document with a map of this area including the re-marked trail. This trail goes to the west from the Loop Trail, and about 1/8-mile from the trailhead, it passes between two small craters. These craters were formed at vents during one of the later periods of volcanic activity in the Valles Caldera. From the craters, the trail leads to a logging road at NM-4 where it turns to the north and continues to the large meadow at the north end of the Loop Trail.
This trail and most of the trails in this area are very easy and appropriate for beginning skiers.
If we continue to have adequate snow, I will lead some Class I tours here later this winter.
The snow depth on Sunday ranged from 4 inches in the campground to as much as 10 inches at the north end of the area. Most of these trails follow grass-covered logging roads.
