An alternative to Maxiglide is any alpine/nordic liquid or paste wax. The paste wax or liquid version of glide wax can easily be applied to either the full length of of a waxless ski and/or the tip and tail of a classic wax pocket ski. Easy to apply with just a little extra diligence required to remove surplus from the waxless pattern.
My favorite is the little tin version of universal F4 [2nd link below], just like a shoe wax tin, that I always carry in my pack. In a pinch the wax can also be used on climbing skins.

Other brands have an equivalent, but Swix's F4 universal glide wax line is pretty easy to find at about any ski shop.
