Hi skiers,

James and I tried again to get to the 10k or Ellis parking areas. No dice. The road was not yet plowed but we forged on toward mile 5 on the crest road. A snow plow was on its way down and pulled up next to us warning us to please turn around as there were several stuck vehicles farther up the road and things were a mess. We turned around along with a caravan of cars and followed the plow back down.
We parked at Doc Long and decided to ski from there. Wouldn’t you know it? Mr. Peter Marks was parked right next to us in an identical vehicle. We decided to ski together from Doc Long to Armijo. For folks not familiar with the route, from the parking area you ski across a small bridge to get to a pedestrian road that leads down a gentle slope toward the crest highway. Once the road ends you are very close to the road and must cross a small drainage to get along the roadside. (There was actually water! Wonders upon wonders.). From there ski a short distance to enter the Cienega/Sulfur Canyon area. We hooked a left and went through the gate to ski uphill toward the Cienega horse trailer parking area. It was a really fun little descent from there to the parking area of Cienega picnic area where we made a left and began Armijo trail. A lone intrepid skier forged the trail ahead of us but she was sticking badly and was on her way back to her car. We offered her MaxiGlide and she continued to ski with us. She was insistent upon trail-breaking the whole time so we enjoyed fresh tracks. The snow continued to fall as the sun fought its way out. The Cienega forest was so quiet and the snow was a blast. Not very fast and one had to use wax, but it made for controlled descents. We turned around at the Faulty/Armijo trail intersection and enjoyed the fun ride back. The snow was definitely getting wetter and stickier upon our return. I love being able to ski in this area and we can so rarely do so! What a great time.

Cheers,
Amy
