[NMCCSC] Change of plans for Jemez outing, Sat., 2/27

I snowshoed Ellis north yesterday. Pretty crappy snow (which was fine for snowshoes) but 10k as I drove past didn’t seem to have much snow at the trailhead. At any rate, crusty, icy, packed conditions. It was trying to snow a little when I left at 3:30 so maybe there is some new dust.

I’m hanging up skis and snowshoes unless we get more snow!

There was no new snow when we skied out of the Griegos parking lot this morning. There are many bare spots whole hillsides bare in the area.

Hello Skiers,

Please see Dana’s email below about down trees and brush on the Ladera Trail switchbacks. Due to the difficulty of skiing here, Upper Road via the switchbacks will no longer be a primary destination.

Due to this change, we do not need the short cut to upper Elk Ridge Trail; therefore, I am moving the parking to the regular large Los Griegos parking area on the south side of NM-4.

Everyone will ski in on Ladera Trail, and some may ski up Elk Ridge Trail and some may continue on Ladera Trail.

So far, I do not know if there is any new snow. If you have skins, please bring them. I do not know if we will be skiing on crust.

So far, eleven members have signed up for this outing.

Hello Sam,

I think you will find it quite difficult to navigate the upper Ladera (above Griegos junction) switchbacks. Vicky Kauffman and I gave up back in Dec because of downed trees and brush. On my second (solo) trip there, after going around or over several logs and my encounter with the skunk, I lost the trail. I went off to the left/east and ended up hiking straight up to the upper road. But with skis on, after going west on the upper road I was able to find a way down that wasn’t as brushy and was not steep either. I was able to ski back to just west of Griegos junction. So I think if your group is open to a little adventure you can find a way up. Might want to take some clippers along for the brush?

Dana
