Greetings skiers!
I just got back from Angel Fire Resort for a couple of days on the teles at the alpine center and one day on the skates at Enchanted Forest. For those of you downhillers, the snow conditions at Angel Fire were good. There are some thin areas, especially in the only black that is open and some of the blues. I’d say half of the runs are still closed but it doesn’t look like lack of snow on most of them so not sure why that is. Many of the blacks are closed likely due to thin cover. We got about 2 inches on Saturday night so that greatly improved things. I thought I would spend some time at Angel Fire Country Club Nordic Center, but I didn’t feel like spending money to use the groomed areas on their golf course when there was so little snow. It looked bare in many places and very hard-packed and icy.
I left James and Liam at the resort on Monday and drove myself over to Enchanted Forest. I would have had a MUCH more enjoyable time if I simply put on the BC Classics. Instead I forced myself to use the skates and I was pretty miserable the entire time. This is my first season on them and it is BY FAR the most difficult discipline of skiing I have ever tried. I struggled for 5 miles on them, half of which was all uphill, and then a decent back to the parking lot. I skied from the base along Powderpuff, Sherwood Forest, Little John, and Long John up to Long John yurt. I turned around and skied the Northwest Passage all the way back to the base. I just couldn’t move on the skates so just ended up walking uphill in a “V” looking and feeling like a fat duck instead of a stream-lined skate skier! As for the snow conditions, all of the trails are open. There are a few spots in the upper portions that are thin, but the vast majority has good coverage and consistent snow conditions for skate and classic. Beautiful and peaceful!
