Backcountry ‘Skin’ Tours – Jan 4 & 5
Come for one day or both. These tours are appropriate for those willing to climb for the sake of seeking out powder descents.
Tuesday, Jan 4: Skin tour of Brazos Cones [only in consideration if US64 is open] or more likely, lapping the ridge to the east of Neff Mtn., a few miles past Cumbress Pass. Each climb and descent of the ridge will mean about 500’ of climbing. Depending on group energy and snow conditions, will be doing a few laps. Expect total climbing to be in the 1000’-1500’ range. In addition to climbing skins and sufficiently wide skis to enjoy the descents, an avalanche transceiver, probe and shovel are required, even though we will be seeking out slopes less than 30-deg.
Wednesday, Jan 5: Skin tour of Wolf Creek Pass. Total elevation gain will be in the 1500’-3000’ range. Must be comfortable skiing powder in tight trees. A avy beacon, shovel and probe required, along with the knowledge of how to use these essential tools. An option, which I will NOT be leading, is to ascend the low-angle service road to the Lobo Overlook, as a kick-n-glide tour. There might be a car shuttle to allow us more descending. Exact route TB D, pending avy conditions and group consensus, but will start by lapping the slopes below Lobo Overlook.
Lodging: Tues and Wed nights at the Best Western in Monte Vista... or whatever lodging plans you can come up with.
Rendezvous: Tuesday – Skiing off from the car at 10:30 am, by driving off from Albuquerque at 7:00 am. Wednesday - 9:00 am, Lobo Overlook Parking Lot, to either setup the shuttle or skinning away from the car.
Important COVID Prerequisites - Only those fully vaccinated and willing to mask when in close proximity! And please stay home if you are experiencing any COVID symptoms.
Send a DM to confirm and/or for more information.
Happy New Year!
