Hello Skiers,

On Sunday, January 22, Michael Arndt and Sam Beard will lead Class I (Easiest) and Class I-II (Easiest-More Difficult) ski outings to the Coyote Call Area on the Valles Caldera National Preserve (VCNP) in the Jemez Mountains.

Sam will lead a Class I easy tour from the Coyote Call Trailhead to the west parallel to the highway (NM-4) for a round-trip distance of about 3 miles. We will be skiing on an old road that may be Old Highway 4, but I cannot find a map confirming that. The route crosses large meadows and goes through forests, some of which burned in the Las Conchas Fire in 2011.

Michael will lead a Class I-II tour clockwise around Coyote Call Loop Trail that has an elevation change of 420 feet. He will ski up the quarter-mile long steep segment of this route to the saddle between Rabbit Ridge and Scooter Peak where the group will probably eat lunch. The route then follows a one-mile segment through the forest with a slight downhill slope to the west end of the loop. If time permits, he will lead a short tour out and back on Log Landing Trail. The group will then descend through meadows and scattered trees to the trailhead.

Meet at 8 am on the west side of the Target store parking lot southeast of the intersection of I-25N and Paseo del Norte.

Bring ski equipment, warm gloves, sun glasses, sun screen, lunch, snacks, drinks, and MaxiGlide and wear warm clothes. MaxiGlide is applied to the skis to help prevent ice sticking to the bottoms of the skis. Ice forms on the bottoms of skis when one skis through cold snow and then through warm melting snow. When enough snow and ice builds up on ski bottoms, the skis will not slide.

We will carpool, because there is plowed parking for only a few vehicles at the trailhead. We will arrive at the trailhead at about 10 am.

Please call or email me if you have questions.
