On March 1-3 Amy and James Mathis, David D'Antonio, and Michael Gaffney ventured out to the Trujillo Meadows Yurt in the Cumbres Pass area for the club's last adventure of the season.
If you have ever wondered what it would be like to try a yurt or hut trip with the club, wonder no more...just do it! The club trip to Trujillo Meadows Yurt in the Cumbres Pass area was a fantastic time. We left Friday morning and returned Sunday afternoon. When we arrived on Friday it was a bluebird day with warming temperatures. We didn't have any sticking issues with our 4-mile ski in and found the snow to be soft but yet crusty in places. We did our best to avoid the constant barage of snowmobile tracks but we all expected those. The yurt was cozy and comfortable and we prepared it for evening. We "mined" snow to melt for our water, make a fire, and got dinner going. It was crazy HOT on the top bunk and we had to crack to door open a tad. The next morning was another bluebird day. For our outing we decided to ski toward the Flat Mountain Yurt. It was an incredible ski of 4 miles out and an 870 foot climb. We even had some pristine snow for a while! The wind started picking up and we had our lunch and turned around. Too bad we did because the yurt was just down the next hill! That's okay. We enjoyed the descent on the way back although the snowmobilers had come and gone were our tracks. Back at the yurt we enjoyed some snacks and tea and then played for a while on the virgin snow near the yurt for some hills! So much fun! We all fell at least once and getting up was no trivial matter. In the wee hours of morning the snow was blowing and the yurt was getting pounded. We awoke to a winter wonderland of 4 new inches and blowing snow. Is it any wonder that the best snow was Sunday during our ski out? Visibility was an issue in a few places and we were concerned about that and the constant wind. We made it back to the car in no time for the drive back to the brown lands. Great trip!!
P.S. There are more pictures on the club's facebook page.
