HUT TRIP 2025 !!!
BEGINNERS TAKE NOTE !!!
Hello, Skiers ! I’m super stoked to announce our hut trip for next season because this is one that will be suitable for beginner hut skiers. We will be going to Shrine Mountain Inn which is just off of Vail Pass at 11,223 feet above sea level. There are actually three cabins, all in proximity to each other: Chuck’s, Jay’s, and Walter’s; we will be staying at Chuck’s Cabin.
The ski in from Vail Pass is a mere 2.7 miles, with less than 700 feet elevation gain. The trail is well used and easy to follow, with no identifiable avalanche hazard. Chuck’s is divided into two halves, upstairs and downstairs. We will occupy the entire hut. Both floors have running hot and cold water, flush toilets , a shower (downstairs) and a bathtub (upstairs). Heat is provided by a wood burning stove, and there are propane stoves and an electric oven for cooking. Firewood is provided as are cooking and dining pots / pans / utensils/plates/bowls, etc. Oh, and did I forget to mention the sauna? Yes, there is a wood fired outdoor sauna that is shared by the three cabins.
Most of the skiing around the hut will be Nordic style touring, although more challenging terrain can be found nearby. Because of the short distance from the highway, skiers always have the option of returning to the parking area and driving elsewhere to ski.
While beginner hut skiers will be interested in this trip, it must be noted that it is NOT for novice skiers. Participants must be able to ski at Class II level while carrying a backpack. This trip is by no means restricted to beginners; experienced hut skiers who are down for a mellow hut experience will want to join in !
For first timers, the trip leader will be readily available to help with planning, including what to take and what to expect on the trip. All carpool and motel arrangements are coordinated by the trip leader. We will have group dinners prepared by volunteers from the group.
We will leave Albuquerque on Saturday, January 25, 2025. We will most likely drive to Leadville on the first day and motel it for the evening. We will drive to the trailhead and ski in to the hut on Sunday, January 26. We will stay for three nights, skiing out on Wednesday, January 29. We will likely drive home the same day, although we always allow an extra day to get home, so plan on a possible total of six days.
