Hello, Denise.
The Valles Caldera National Preserve is closed. My understanding from other reports is that the gates are locked and the trails in the NP that are on the south side of the road (Coyote Call, etc.) are taped off (closed). Although the VCNP is closed, I hear that in National Parks in general, not all personnel are furloughed. Law Enforcement personnel are considered "critical functions". I do not know how closely that applies to VCNP, but we are all warned.

Once the VCNP is open again, there are two winter access points along Highway 4 that do not require fence-jumping nor fee paying.

Dave

Subject: [NMCCSC] Valles Caldera open? Conditions?

Hello all. Does anyone know if the Valles Caldera is open, given the shutdown of federal facilities? I used to cross the fence, way back when it was in private ownership.  And what are the conditions?

We live in Santa Fe, but aren't so great at downhill skiing. Any other recommendations for this great snow?

thanks, Denise
