This message is directed to those that may have interest in a hiking/backpacking/peak bagging plan of mine.  One night car-camping, one night backpack in the southern Magdalena mountains.

I've got a plan for Thursday, April 18 through Saturday, April 20 that includes hiking both Vicks Peak and San Mateo Mtn.  It starts with car-camping at Springtime NF campground Thursday night.  Friday hiking out the Shipman Canyon trail to Myers Cabin (about 5 mi.) and making camp, then hike up San Mateo Mtn.  It looks like about a half-mile off-trail hike with about 650 ft. of elevation.  Then back to our camp by Myers Cabin for the night.  The next day, Saturday, there is a Sierra club group coming by on a day-hike to do the off-trail up Vicks Peak.  From Meyers Cabin it is also an off-trail hike to Vicks.  About 1 mi. and 800 ft. of elevation.  Do that hike with the SC group.  Back down to Meyers Cabin, pack up and hike out.  Getting back to Springtime Campground late afternoon, then drive home.

These 2 peaks are in the southern Magdalena Mtns.  The drive to the Springtime Campground from Santa Fe is 3 1/2 hrs.  Estimate 6 mi. hiking Friday and 7 mi. Saturday.

The listing for that Sierra Club dayhike:

Saturday, April 20. Strenuous hike of Vicks Peak, San Mateo Mountains. Meet at Springtime Campground at 9
a.m. and you may prefer to camp overnight. We'll hike up to Myers Cabin on the Shipman Canyon trail saddle and
then scramble 900 feet up Vicks Peak for views far over southern New Mexico. Round trip 10 miles, 3,000 feet
elevation gain, 6 hours. One dog, no children under 15. RSVP by April 17, 2019 to Jim Nelson at
jcnelson@gilanet.com or 575-854-2259.
