Hello Skiers,

On Saturday, January 25, fourteen Ski Club members enjoyed Class I skiing in the Redondo Campground area. It was a warm sunny day with generally good snow conditions. We found a bare spot covered with pine needles near the trailhead where the sun is on the trail nearly all day. We skied Loop Trail, Twin Craters Trail, and Crater Spur Trail.

Gary and Carolyn Hughes-Fenchel brought Gusty, a skijoring dog, that pulled Gary around the loop and on the spur trail. Gary skied over Gusty's paw prints so that there was no damage to the ski tracks.

The following three unusual events occurred on this outing:

1. At Walatowa, one person in our group learned that we were skiers, and she was a snowshoer from another group. She joined her group who was also at Walatowa Center.

2. After we skied into the campground and were waiting for some of the members, a lady came to me carrying two rolls of white flat plastic. They were the bottom laminate layers with the molded fish scales from her skis. She had recently been given old Trak skis, and on her first outing, the bottom layer came off. She skied the tour on skis with a bottom like medium grit sandpaper and was able to kick and glide and climb the low hills.

3. My co-leader, Ruth Bargman-Romero, who was the sweep for the outing, reported that when her group went down the first hill, a skier with 30-year-old boots fell. One boot tore and left the 3-pin sole section in the binding. She was not able to fix the boot with duct tape and returned to the cars to read until noon. Ruth returned to the cars early after skiing around part of the loop with another member. The skier with the damaged boot used Ruth's boots to get in about 30 minutes of skiing. Ruth commented that with beginning skies you have to have a second person available, because usually there is a beginner that cannot make the complete loop.

The members on the outing were Sam Beard, Michael Arndt, Ruth Bargman-Romero, Gary and Carolyn Hughes-Fenchel, Sybil Keyser, Ellen Bauman, Bill Zobel, Leslie Labry, Jane Schwendeman, Debra Hollis, Peggy Heinz, Wendy Cox, and Debbie McGrew.

My co-leaders, Ruth and Michael, helped make the outing enjoyable for everyone.
