Hazel Lathrop will speak about bus tokens and the history of that mode of travel. Bus and subway fare tokens were a fact of life for many commuters in cities large and small across the country. Fare tokens were a convenience for frequent riders and provided savings over cash fares. Introduced by 1930 they were still in use in the 1970’s.
Shortly after the railroad arrived in Albuquerque in 1885, it became clear that people would need transportation from the depot to their destination. From the mule drawn wagons of 1880 to electrically moved trolleys on rails in 1904 the need to provided public transportation grew as the city grew.
Find out more about fare tokens, how the Albuquerque Bus Company grew, who and how fare tokens were made and changing fare structures.

Joe Alden White was born in West Texas. His grandfather, he believed, was a musical savant. He could play any instrument that he could hold, he played the trumpet for the likes of the Jimmy Dorsey band during the big band era. He changed careers a few times… like cowboying on ranches that measured themselves, not by acres, but by square miles, to buy cattle, managing a feedyard, owning construction companies and even a commercial laundry.
From his earliest memories there was music in his home. Beethoven or Herb Albert and the Tiajuana Brass would be spinning on Dad's old turn table, Roger Miller would be singing about "The King of The Road" or Burl Ives would tell how "Bill Grogan's Goat" flagged a train… Then the Beatles happened… and Dylan, The Stones, Iron Butterfly, CCR, CSN&Y, Cream, Cocker, Allman Brothers, Hendrix, The Who, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath. Then he heard Guy Clark…he states, “I needed to hear songwriters, but not just any writers and any old songs. I needed a country beat. Songs that spoke of real folks, folks that I knew. I needed to hear Jerry Jeff, Prine, Fromholz, BW, Kristofferson, Emmylou, Pure Prairie League, Flying Burrito Bros, Lucinda, Nancy Griffith, Steve Earle, Townes, Cash, Jones, Waylon, Ray Wylie, Chris Knight, Hayes Carll, John Moreland and on and on… I was surrounded by music and by friends who played and wrote music. I had no choice but to write songs.”

At WHEELS Museum 1100 2nd St SW, Albuquerque, NM
Admission is $10 per person
Reservations required. Call WHEELS at (505) 243-6269
Kristy’s music is deeply rooted in jazz and improvisation … and morphs from there. Like all the best artists before her, she is stepping ahead with her own style. Drawing from diverse influences like Nina Simone, Mingus, Steely Dan, and Queen, she shapes something entirely unique. Her shows feature her original jazz inflected music mixed with familiar jazz standards — rendered as anything but — and well-loved pop tunes put through her unique stylistic filter. It all comes together in an unforgettable, sonic feast for the ears that has audiences raving.
