Ronn Perea, historian, author and popular speaker at WHEELS will present a riveting picture of the Bataan death march with specific emphasis on what it meant to the families and people of New Mexico.
The Bataan Death March was the forcible transfer by the Imperial Japanese Army of 75,000 American and Filipino prisoners of war from the Philippines’ Bataan Peninsula to Camp O'Donnell via San Fernando.
New Mexico’s 200th Coast Artillery became a part of the Bataan Death March during World War II. The soldiers were all captured by the Japanese army on April 9, 1942. They joined 75,000 prisoners of war. The soldiers had to walk sixty miles to Camp O’Donnell in central Luzon in the Philippines. The walk claimed the lives of 16,950 American and Filipino soldiers, with 900 from New Mexico.
