WHEELS Museum Events for October and November
 

Speaker Event:
The Civil War in New Mexico

John is one of WHEELS most popular speakers. In the winter and spring of 1862, a brigade of about 2,800 troops invaded the New Mexico Territory hoping to capture it and much of the Western United States for Jefferson Davis and the Confederacy. They met Union forces in two battles - Valverde and Glorieta Pass, as well as at skirmishes in Albuquerque and Peralta.

John Taylor will cover this campaign and its importance in the Civil War.  The lecture will include detailed descriptions of the rationale for the invasion, the battles and their outcomes, and the long-term impact of the invasion.

 
78RPM Record Sale and Ragtime Music Event:
            The First Annual 78 Spinners Record Sale Benefit for WHEELS
            Saturday, October 19 from 9AM to 2PM
            WHEELS Museum, 1100 Second St. SW, Albuquerque

   Admission is Free, but donations are gratefully accepted.
 
There will be at least 10 knowledgeable 78 record collectors selling some rare and not so rare records that will be of interest to many.  There will also be sheet music, books, and other ephemera (think 1900-1960) to accompany the records.  Profits from the sale will go directly to WHEELS.
 
The New Ridge Place Ramblers will be playing music of the era.
 
Thanks to all who donated over 1000 78 RPM beautiful pieces of shellac recordings.  WHEELS will benefit monetarily from the sale, so tell your friends to join the fun on Saturday, October 19th.
 

 
Sellers’ Event
           Bead Show by the Bead Society of New Mexico

BSNM members are invited to sell their handmade jewelry and accessories in the Museum’s main hall.  Many unique items will be for sale, and you will fascinated by all that is involved in this interesting hobby and craft. 

This event is a fundraiser for the museum.  A portion of sales will benefit the WHEELS Museum, a non-profit organization.

There is something majestic about traveling through the Southwest. From the magical White Sands to Route 66, there is something indescribable about the places in the Land of Enchantment and beyond. Roadside photographer and journalist Gregory Hasman will talk about his love of open roads and a few of his favorite trips in the Southwest, and why traveling down two-lane highways is so important in promoting and preserving a piece of Americana.

Ronn is one of WHEELS most popular speakers.  Ronn will share is knowledge of the history of Route 66 and its central place in the heart and history of Albuquerque and New Mexico.  His talk will be sprinkled with anecdotes and stories that are likely to be new you.

 
Art Event
Art Class with Christa Callan Tarr

The cost is $35.00 for class and materials
 
Each participant will learn basic acrylic paint skills and and go home with an original painting of their own creation. Ms. Callan Tarr is well known and has taught art classes for all ages. This will be a very creative experience, so have fun with inspiration and artistic growth.

Teenager Gil Wheeler is the likeable main protagonist in “The Horse on the Sidewalk,” Baker H. Morrow’s engaging collection of 11 coming-of-age stories. They’re mostly set on the eastern edge of Albuquerque in the late 1950s, meaning Hoffmantown. In the book, it’s called Huttontown. Gil and his family live in the neighborhood.

The WHEELS Museum Gift Shop is looking for donations.  If you have Western or transportation related items such Kachina Dolls, pottery, jewelry, art work or similar items please consider donating them.  We have tourists from across the United States and around the world who purchase unique items that are not found in regular gift shops.
