Donna Pedace
“Women Warriors: Hidden Spies in World War II”

Note from the author: Perhaps the bravest of them all, Noor Inayat Khan was the first female radio operator sent to France by the British Special Operations Executive (SOE). A descendant of Indian royalty, she set aside her Sufi pacifist beliefs to volunteer in the fight against Nazi occupation. Noor provided invaluable support to both the British and the French Resistance before being captured by the Gestapo. Despite brutal interrogations, she refused to betray her comrades. Classified under the "Nacht und Nebel" ("Night and Fog") directive—designed to make prisoners disappear without a trace—she was eventually transported to Dachau Concentration Camp, where she was executed.

Joe McKinney and Chuck Larabee
“The Alvarado Hotel: Why It Was Torn Down and More”

For nearly 70 years, Fred Harvey’s Alvarado Hotel served as a destination for travelers, the social center for Albuquerque residents, and the anchor for the core of downtown Albuquerque. Despite years of preservation advocacy, the Alvarado fell victim to the wrecking ball in early 1970.
Joe McKinney and Chuck Larrabee will discuss the economic forces that led to the hotel’s closure and the citizens’ advocacy efforts to save the landmark. Joe and Chuck were both involved: Chuck as a high school student protesting the hotel’s potential demise, and Joe as a leader of the grass-roots campaign working with city leaders and decision makers trying to halt the demolition and define a future for the structure.

Sage Vogel
“Dichos en Nichos”
Sage Vogel’s debut story collection invites readers into the heart of an archetypal 1950s Northern New Mexico village, where the fruit orchards, arroyo roads, adobe homes, and even pigsties hold tales of wit, romance, woe, and wisdom.
Dichos en Nichos contains ten interconnected stories inspired by original dichos—pithy folk sayings and proverbs. Vogel's dichos—presented in both Spanish and English—are shared among a colorful cast of characters.
The dichos offer guidance, caution, and comfort as the townsfolk navigate themes of identity, community, loss, and love. From tales of sacrifice and survival to those of intimacy and independence, each story is a testament to the strength and resilience of the human spirit.

Richard and Shirley Flint
“Overhaul”
In Overhaul, historians Richard Flint and Shirley Cushing Flint present the largely forgotten story of Albuquerque's locomotive repair shops, which were the driving force behind the city's economy for more than seventy years. In the course of their study they also document the thousands of skilled workers who kept the locomotives in operation, many of whom were part of the growing Hispano and Native American middle class. Their critical work kept the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe's steam trains running and established and maintained Albuquerque's unique character in the region.
Including a generous selection of historic photographs, Overhaul provides a glimpse into the people, places, culture, and special history found in Albuquerque's locomotive shops during the boom of steam railroading. The Flints provide an engaging and informative account of how these shops and workers played a crucial role in the formation and development of the Duke City.
