[Volunteers_fosm] FOSM Project to Fell Hazard Trees at Tree Spring TH & in Balsam Glade PA, Wed., 4-10-19

Hello Everyone,
 
On Wednesday, April 10, FOSM volunteers will be felling hazard trees at Tree Spring Trailhead and in the Balsam Glade Picnic Area.
 
Kerry Wood, SRD Trails and Wilderness Program Manager, selected and marked with pink flagging 4 trees at Tree Spring TH with the maximum diameter being 9 inches. He selected 12 trees in Balsam Glade PA with the maximum diameter being 29 inches. Yesterday, I found all the marked trees at Tree Spring TH, and all but two in Balsam Glade PA. We will be felling these trees with chain saws. In order to fell the 16 marked trees safely, we will be felling a few additional trees adjacent to the marked trees. Remember to bring copies of the attached tree maps, your diameter measuring tapes, and plumb bobs.
 
Meet at 8:30 am at the FOSM Guard Station behind the Sandia Ranger Station.  With seasonal fire fighters now reporting for duty, Kerry Wood has asked that volunteers leave their vehicles in the main parking lot in front of the Ranger Station.  This opens up parking for the seasonals, who are at work all week and often training on the roads behind the Ranger Station.  This is a courtesy to them and provides safety for the seasonals and volunteers.
 
Dress warmly and bring work gloves, lunch, snacks, drinks, hard hats and eye and ear protection. Wear long pants, long-sleeve shirts, and sturdy boots with slip-resistant soles. Sawyers must wear chaps and 8-inch high leather boots. Anyone working near the sawyers must also wear protective chaps.
