Hello Everyone:
Yesterday, Monday, July 1, 2019, the FOSM Trails Crew hiked Rocky Point, Crest Trail 130 South from the upper tram terminal to the Tree Spring Trail junction and down Tree Spring. A total of 5 trees, ranging in size from 5 to 27 inches in diameter were removed from this section of Crest Trail 130S. It is now clear. It was a welcome change from the 50+ fallen trees days. Rocky Point and Tree Spring trails were clear. Most of the trees were fairly simple to remove. The fallen 27 inch diameter tree, however, provided a much bigger challenge and presented quite a mystery. Cliff Giles had hiked 130S with his son recently and provided a report of his finding which included a photo the large fallen tree with his son standing behind it. It was partially blocking the trail with its base near a large standing tree causing the trail to be very narrow at that point and impassible for horses. When the crew arrived at its documented location, it was found to be about 10 or so feet south of where it was during Cliff's hike. We found no evidence of recent major earthquakes or possible extra-terrestrial involvement, so it is assumed that people did this for some reason known only to them. No telling what unusual things one can possibly find when visiting the Sandias...
The day was clear to partly cloudy, cool in the morning with a light breeze, but warming rapidly as the day progressed. There was evidence of a light rain the night before and the soil showed evidence of that. The mountain is exceptionally green with a continuing profusion of wildflowers.
Yesterday's crew consisted of Cliff Giles, Jim Levesque, Byron Garner, Jerry Pekarek, Sim Cook, Bill Savage and Bob Lowder.
Please see attached Word document for photos and additional narrative. All photos by Bill Savage and Cliff Giles.
