Hello Everyone,
On Wednesday, September 25, FOSM volunteers will return to the Cedro CFRP area south of FR-242 (Juan Tomas Road) south of the Ranger Station to continue thinning the piñon/juniper forest there as part of our commitment to a meadow restoration project. However, there are news reports that a court order related to Mexico Spotted Owl habitat has stopped all tree felling on National Forests in the SW. I am seeking clarification from the SRD.
If we are not permitted to fell the Cedro P/J trees on Wednesday, we will cut brush in the Capulin Snow Play Area traffic island so that snow can be pushed into this area. We will use power brush cutters and chain saws. If we have enough time and volunteers, we may also cut some large locust brush in the run out part of the new sledding slope.
Meet at 8:00 AM at the FOSM Guard Station behind the Sandia Ranger Station. Wear long pants, long sleeve shirts, and sturdy boots with slip-resistant soles. Bring work gloves and hard hats. If you do not have a hard hat, one will be provided. Sawyers are required to also wear 8-inch high boots and chaps. Bring eye and ear protection. Swampers working near saws are also required to wear chaps. Bring lunch, snacks, and drinks.
Please park in the north parking lot in front of the Ranger Station so that there will be more parking space for SRD seasonal employees and fire fighters near the FOSM Guard Station. We will have the JHA in the front parking lot.
If you have questions, please email me at samgbeard at msn.com.
