Hello Everyone:

Yesterday, the FOSM Trails Maintenance Crew hiked Ellis Trail to the Osha Loop junction, Osha Loop to the 10K North junction and then back via 10K North. A total of 9 trees were removed of which 2 were from Ellis and 7 from Osha Loop. The trees ranged in size from 4 to 11 inches in diameter. A number of hang-ups and leaners were also analyzed. One, a 4 inch dead fir leaning over the trail, was removed. The rest were found to be soundly supported and easy to get around, so they were left as is. The few that could in any way hinder the passage of livestock, could be bypassed easily. Other minor maintenance work such as clearing off small fallen branches, other debris, etc. were also completed. Crosscut saws and other hand tools were used for this work. Based upon yesterday's work and that previously done by Steve Roholt's crew, Ellis, Osha Loop and 10K North trails are now clear.

The day was cool and mostly clear with occasional light breezes and high, thin clouds in the afternoon. It was a good day for wildlife viewing with a number of healthy looking deer and a couple of flocks of turkey hens with their young (poults) in tow. The aspens are slowly beginning to turn gold but still have a way to go before their best showing.

Yesterday's crew consisted of Cliff Giles, Jim Levesque, Jerry Pekarek, Byron Garner, Phil Cromer and Bob Lowder.

Please see attached Word file for photos and additional narrative. Last photo is by Jamey Browning, all others are by Cliff Giles.

NOTE: Yesterday's trail work was done before the crew received notice of the court-ordered moratorium banning tree cutting on Cibola National Forest. It is likely that there will be no further trail maintenance reports until that matter is resolved.

Bob L.
