Hello Everyone:

Yesterday, August 8, 2022, the FOSM Trails Maintenance Crew hiked Wagon, Sulphur, a portion of Faulty, Armijo and Acequia trails to remove previously reported fallen trees and to do other trail work as needed. The big project for the day was to remove a multiple tree hang-up on Armijo trail. The remaining work consisted of moving the end of a large fallen tree trunk off the lower edge of the trail, cutting back protruding vegetation, providing drainage for a large puddle in the middle of Armijo Trail and various other remediation as needed.

There is a rather large hang-up suspended high over Armijo Trail at about midpoint. Our crew has been evaluating this tree for some time. It still appears to be well supported. This is one of those situations where the danger to the crew trying to remove it is currently higher than the danger to those passing under it. Unless there is some significant change in its status, our crew is content to let nature take its course. This tree remains on the "to do" list, so it is not necessary to keep reporting it on CTR.

Yesterday morning was cool. There had been significant rain and, whether one views it as a blessing or a curse, for the most part, the trails were quite muddy. The humidity was very high. This is good if you are a forest. If you are a desert dwelling human trying to hike and do sometimes heavy work, things can start feeling a little sticky as the sun comes out and midday temperatures approach. The flowers are sure loving it though. Upon the return to the Ranger Station, the crew was welcomed with a good, old-fashioned cloudburst. The monsoon at its best.

A big "Thank You" to Jenny Blackmore and the FOSM Trail Construction Crew. The completion of the Wagon Trail Extension down into the
Sulphur PA, eliminates the need to hike on the main access road in order to do loop hikes in the Cienega, Sulphur, Doc Long area. Well done!

Yesterday's crew consisted of Byron Garner, Jerry Pekarek, Rav Nicholson, John Cooper, Jamey Browning, David McCreery, Jenny Blackmore and Bob Lowder. Please see attached Word file for photos and additional narrative. All photos by Jamey Browning.

Thanks,

Bob L.
