Cliff,
Much appreciated for the spotlight on the CATIP trail project and the many contributions by Bob, Jenny and the crew. The impact of that project is long and far reaching but never received much attention partially because Bob didn’t want any – he relished the work but didn’t place much emphasis on getting recognized (the quiet doer). So the accomplishments and the public’s enjoyment of the area continues like so many things without many knowing the inputs to get there.
It was such an accomplishment and anyone involved digging, moving rock (plenty of it!) knows there was no “easy trail” in that area. There Bob (and Betsy) was day in and day out, hauling rock bars, signs, etc making the project go.
Such a testament to the power of stewardship and partners!

I sent a message in August celebrating the completion of the Challenge Trail extension project<https://friendsofthesandias.org/challenge-trail-extension/> and pointing to a webpage providing links to a newspaper article and KOB TV feature about the event⏤well deserved accolades for the project team.
FOSM co-founder Don Carnicom noted that the Cienega/Armijo Trails Improvement Project (CATIP)⏤although more expansive (6 miles of new or improved trails) and having taken over 5 years to complete⏤had not received similar publicity.
While a webpage<https://friendsofthesandias.org/cienega-armijo-trails-improvement-project-catip/> summarizing the project doesn’t offset the lack of media coverage, it does provide a means of recognizing the trail construction crew’s enormous efforts, and, with a lot of help from Jenny Blackmore, an opportunity to pay tribute to Bob Galloway, who led the project for the first three years.
I was awestruck by the work that went into this project as I reviewed Bob’s reports looking for rare photos of him. I’ve heard hikers and mountain bikers rave about the trails. Thanks to the many of you who contributed countless hours to making the new trail system a reality.
