Hello Everyone,
On Wednesday, December 3, FOSM volunteers will be felling donation trees at the Dispersed Camping (DC) site on Forest Road 462 south of the Ranger Station and east of NM-337.
Canyon Young, SRD Trails and Wilderness Program Manager, has given FOSM permission to fell dead trees at the seven dispersed camping sites south of the Ranger Station and east of NM-337. Each site is identified by the Forest Road Number, the letters DC, and the site number on the road. The seven site identification names are 242DC1, 242DC2, 462DC1, 542DC1, 542DC2, 542DC3, and 542DC4. These locations are shown on the Manzanita Mountains Trail System map available free at the Sandia Ranger Station front desk. At each site, there are a few small areas that have been cleared for parking, and each area has a round steel fireplace. All these Forest Roads are dirt, and pickups or other high clearance vehicles are recommended for travel on them. A sign with the name of the site is posted at each site entrance.
Chuck Logan and visited a few of these sites today (Monday, December 1). Forest Road 462 is located approximately 1 mile south of the Ranger Station on the east side of NM-337. Most of the dead trees here are small. We will fell and limb the trees and haul the trunks to the FOSM Guard Station and pile them adjacent to the Hazmat Building. We will buck them later, and the bucked wood will be hauled to Mike Oliver's woodlot.
Meet at the FOSM Guard Station behind the Ranger Station at 9 am on Wednesday, December 3. Due to the colder morning temperatures, we will be meeting at 9 am in December.
Wear long pants, a long sleeve shirt, and boots with slip-resistant soles. Bring a hard hat, work gloves, a warm jacket, eye and ear protection, snacks, drinks, and lunch. We found about a half-inch of snow at the site this morning. We will be using chain saws and will haul the tree trunks in pickups and/or small trailers.
Please email me if you have questions.
