Hello Everyone,

We will be felling, limbing, and bucking hazard trees on S. Crest Trail either near the Ten Three restaurant or near the Crest,

  1.
Felling near the restaurant — We will go to Ellis Trailhead and attempt to open the large red gate on the Service Road. There is some uncertainty about whether I can open this gate with either a key or a combination. Recently there have been days when the four-lock arrangement was irregular — I could not open the gate either with a key or a combination. Once, one lock was missing, and we worked along the road, but when we came out, someone had put a combination lock on that I could not open. We hurried to the upper tram terminal and fortunately found the young man who gave me the combination.
  2.
Felling trees on S. Crest Trail near the Crest — If we cannot enter at the Service Road gate, we will drive to the Kiwanis Meadow Road gate and park near it. I can open the USFS lock that is usually on that gate. We will hike down that road and fell any hazard trees that we find. We will then turn right on the S. Crest Trail going uphill and fell trees there. If we have time will hike toward the Nature Trail near the ridge, turn left and hike toward Kiwanis Cabin and fell trees there. We will stay together and work as one crew.

Meet at the FOSM Guard Station behind the ranger station at 8 am on Wed., Sept. 24.

Wear or bring the following: long pants, a long sleeve shirt, hiking boots, work gloves, hard hat (we have one to loan you), ear and eye protection, lunch, drinks, snacks, and a jacket for cool temperatures. We will be using chain saws.

The combination to the vehicle gate behind the ranger station is FOSM (Friends of the Sandia Mountains) on a keypad -- 3676.
