Hello Everyone,
On Wednesday, October 7, FOSM volunteers will process logs on the ground at the Balsam Glade Picnic Area. We had planned to complete bucking a large log near the nature trail overlook, but I found only 10 rounds there today (Sunday). The other large rounds and large limbs have been taken maybe with or without a permit. In order to find more wood to process on Wednesday, I found several smaller logs on the ground. I also found a few dead trees that we can fell, if necessary.
We will score the tops of rounds, and East Mountain High School students 16 and 17 years old will split them with steel wedges and sledgehammers. We will be working with 16 students and 4 faculty members. The students will haul the split wood in wheelbarrows to Mike Oliver's trailer parked in the upper parking lot. Possibly they will also help unload the wood at Mike's woodlot.
We are meeting the students at Balsam Glade PA at 9 am. We will bring 20 hard hats and some ear plugs, if the students do not have ear protection.
FOSM volunteers will meet at 8 am at the Guard Station to load chain saws and other tools in vehicles. We also need one or two pickups to haul four wheelbarrows to Balsam Glade PA. Sawyers will be felling, limbing, and bucking a few dead trees. Project co-leader Rene Archer will be working with us and can haul tools in her SUV.
Wear long pants, a long sleeve shirt, and boots with slip resistant soles. Bring work gloves, hard hats, chaps, lunch, snacks, and drinks.
Please email me if you have any questions.
