Hello Everyone:
Yesterday, the FOSM Trails Crew completed a "Patrol Hike" on Sandia Crest trails as follows; Lower Switchback, Upper Switchback, Buried Cable, Gravel Pit, Rocky Point and small sections of Crest Trail 130 South. No fallen trees had been reported on these
trails, but with a very high use period around the annual Balloon Fiesta approaching, this was done to assure that these trails were clear and safe to use.
A dangerous suspended "widow maker" and a poorly supported high hang-up were removed. Also this hike provided the opportunity to remediate previously cut fallen trees to bring them into compliance with USFS trail clearance/width standards. Eight such trees,
or parts thereof were, were addressed. These trees ranged in size from five to sixteen inches in diameter. Crosscut saws and other hand tools were used for this work. It now appears that all trees cut back from these trails now meet USFS requirements.
The day was clear and cool with an occasional light breeze (except at the Crest where there always seems to be a brisk wind blowing). It is finally feeling like autumn is approaching, at least at these elevations.
Yesterday's crew consisted of Cliff Giles, Jim Levesque, Byron Garner and Bob Lowder.
Please see the attached Word document for photos and additional narrative. All photos by Cliff Giles.
