Hello Volunteers,
The USDA Forest Service (FS) Southwestern Region received an Order from the United States District Court for the District of Arizona stating that the agency’s “timber management actions in Region 3 national forests must cease,” pending formal consultation regarding the Mexican Spotted Owl.
Active timber management activities are shutting down in a timely and orderly fashion on the Tonto, Lincoln, Santa Fe, Gila, Cibola, and Carson National Forests. This includes cutting of all vegetation.
At this time, no new fuelwood permits will be sold, Christmas tree permits will not be issued while the region is seeking clarification from the court, and forests will halt any prescribed fire operations. We realize the burden this places on the forests, the communities we serve and local publics affected by these findings. We are working with the court
We understand our obligation to meet Endangered Species Act (ESA) requirements are committed to our continued efforts at recovering the Mexican Spotted owl. We appreciate your patience and understanding.
At this point that means no cutting of any trees even if they have fallen and are blocking a trail.
