Hello Everyone,

On Monday, November 18, Russell and Ellie Parker and Sam Beard installed a metal roof on the vent structure of a modern restroom in the La Cueva Picnic Area. The metal roofing materials were purchased a few years ago by the Cibola National Forest so that deteriorating shingle roofs on eight restrooms could be replaced. So far, FOSM volunteers have replaced roofs on three restrooms in the southern part of the Ranger District.

Photographs of the ventilation structure on top of the La Cueva PA restroom are shown in the attached Word document. This structure is wood with a shingle roof like the one on the restroom. Similar galvanized steel vent structures with a steel roof were installed on the restrooms in the Oak Flat Group Picnic Area. Restroom constructed in recent years include two 12-inch diameter vertical black plastic pipes that provide ventilation of the underground vault.

The photographs show the extremely poor condition of the restroom and vent roofs. At one small place on the east side of the restroom roof, the wooden sheath under the shingles has been exposed for so long that the wood is rotten and will be replaced when FOSM replaces the roof. Fortunately, the wood under the vent shingles was good, and the metal roof could be screwed to it.

The roofing process is shown in the photos -- the steel drip edge is screwed to the eaves, black felt is nailed to the wood sheathing, R-panels of steel roofing are screwed over the felt, wide steel gable trim pieces are attached, and a steel ridge cap is installed. The roof, eaves, and gables are completely covered with the painted steel materials and will provide protection for many years.

If warm weather allows, we hope to replace the remainder of this La Cueva restroom roof this fall.
