*Travel Safely This Summer with Tips from APD!*

Summer
is often time for vacations and travel, but unfortunately can also put your
empty home at risk for theft and break-ins. Here are some home safety tips
for while you're away:

   - Have your mail collected by a trusted neighbor or family member, or
consider having your mail stopped while you’re away. The same goes for
   newspaper delivery.
   - If possible, ask a trusted friend or family member to stay at your
   home.
   - Consider installing automatic timers on lights, TVs or radios to give
   the impression someone is home.
   - Make sure your pets are cared for while you’re away. Either have
someone stay at your house to watch them, have them board with family or
friends, or consider a dog boarding service.
   - Ensure all doors are locked securely and windows are securely latched.
Also, make sure your garage is closed and locked, and any gates around your
   property are also secured.
   - Don’t announce your vacation on social media. This is one way people
know your home is empty and vulnerable. Wait until you get home to post
   photos of your trip.
   - Let family and close friends know your itinerary, and check in with
them occasionally. Let them know when you get home.
   - If staying in a hotel, park in a well-lit area close to your room. Do
not allow strangers into your hotel room, and call the hotel front desk to
confirm if someone claims to be with the hotel maintenance staff.
   - Don’t bring valuable jewelry or similar items with you. If you must
bring these items, consider having them locked in the hotel safe overnight
or when you’re gone from your room.
   - If you are carrying ID cards, money and credit cards, keep them in a
front pocket. Don’t carry them in a purse, as purses are easily stolen.
Consider keeping copies of ID and credit cards in another suitcase, in case
   yours are stolen.

As
many of you know, the Office of Neighborhood Coordination (ONC) is in the
middle of the Neighborhood Engagement Process (NEP). This process is in
place to gather information from community stakeholders that will help
shape the amendments to the Neighborhood Association Recognition Ordinance
(NARO). The NEP process includes the hiring of not only the independent
contractor Social Innovations Strategy Group (SISGroup), but also
facilitators employed by SISGroup to assist. These facilitators are: Dr.
Rudy Garcia, Jamie Welles, Barbara Garcia, Antonio Maestas, and Lara
Bryson. These facilitators, along with Everette Hill, will be continuing to
contact stakeholders in the community to gather their input. If you have
any questions, please do not hesitate to contact ONC and we can clarify any
issues. Please take a minute and familiarize yourself with all of the
facilitators. Their bios can be found at:
