A few years ago I spoke for myself in a committee hearing about a memorial to stop oil leasing close to Chaco Canyon. I began by explaining that I am a retired petroleum engineer and not opposed to fracking in general but was opposed to drilling near this site. The I explained how moved I was by Chaco Canyon when I visited. I said I thought it was a place like no other--magical, spiritual and I don’t remember what else. Though not an exactly weepy story, the memorial passed the  committee almost unanimously. Several conservative Republicans voted in favor including Pirtle. So maybe it works sometimes. Laura
