KAFB Man Killed After Raft Flips Near Taos

Journal Staff Report
    The fast-moving Rio Grande claimed the life of a
rafter near Taos 
on Monday afternoon, according to a State Police
spokesman.
    A group of rafters from Kirtland Air Force Base
were in an area 
called the boulder garden near the Dunn Bridge, when
one of the boats 
flipped, Lt. Jimmy Glascock said.
    The occupants were ejected, and the victim, a male
in his early 
20s, was swept downstream before others in the group
could pull him to 
safety, Glascock said.
    When the group reached the victim about 30 minutes
later, they 
tried to revive him but were unsuccessful.
    Glascock said the group took the victim to Pilar,
where rescue 
workers responded.
    The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
    The victim was wearing a life vest, and no alcohol
was involved in 
the accident, according to Glascock.
    Police are withholding the victim's identity
pending notification 
of the next of kin. Glascock said the man was
connected to Kirtland Air 
Force Base, but he did not know if he was enlisted or
associated in 
another way.
