Subject: RE: Log Boom installation at Cochiti Lake
Steve, Tim, and boaters:
I've been searching our servers and have found some photos of the debris on the lake and even in a few of the upstream tributary canyons. Debris removal was a big job in Sept.
I am going to the site soon and will get some photos before installation, and then I or one of the Cochiti rangers will get photos of the boom in place. I only have a diagram sketched of the configuration.
I doubt that the Cochiti staff would want anyone out there during installation, but the boom will be removed when ice forms, and re-installed next spring. So,
I think we have the winter to figure out how to minimize effects on boating.
It would help me to have some numbers, such as:
- how many trips to you take each year?
- how many people?
- When is the preferred time?
- If you take commercial trips through White Rock, what would be the financial impact if you couldn't?
- How many kids/educational groups use this stretch of the river?
Thank you,
Dana

Dana: Thanks for the heads up on the boom at the head of Cochiti. I recall that this tactic was deployed following Cerro Grande. The only impact of that configuration on boating I noted was that the head of navigation on the lake ended there for most of the year (a shallow bar
formed, blocking traffic from upstream, but no visible debris).
Following the decommissioning of the boom, the deep water retreated perhaps a thousand yards below. I occurs to me that this event may have produced more and larger debris to discharge into the reservoir and that this condition could continue farther into the future than in 2000.
A few months ago, I tried to GoogleEarth maps of the head of the lake,
hoping to get a flavor of how much debris the Corps was dealing with.
The data were all old and unhelpful. My thinking is that is at least possible that river navigation will be interrupted. Do you have/can you provide recent remote photography or surface photos that would provide us with enough information to have relevant opinions on how useful/necessary might be this installation?
