We will be meeting at the MCM Elegante hotel on Menual just east of
University. The get together starts at 6:30 pm.

The meeting Monday the 12th will be a presentation by Paul Bauer who has
recently written a Rio Grande guidebook. here is info on the meeting topic:

Title of Talk: The Geology and Landscapes of The Rio Grande in Northern
New Mexico

Paul Bauer is a principal geologist and associate director at the New
Mexico Bureau of Geology & Mineral Resources at New Mexico Tech. He
received a Ph.D. in geology from New Mexico Tech in 1988. He served as
manager of the state’s Geologic Mapping Program for 12 years, and
was program coordinator for the Decision-Makers Field Conferences for 10
years, a program designed to bridge the gap between earth science and
policy makers in New Mexico.

Since his first Taos Box trip in 1980, he has spent much of the last 30
years investigating the geology and hydrogeology of north-central New
Mexico, with an emphasis on the Taos County region. He has led many
field trips to northern New Mexico, including educational whitewater
rafting tours. His current research is focused on using field studies to
describe the geologic evolution of the mountains and basins of northern
New Mexico, and the hydrogeologic conditions of the Upper Rio Grande region.

He has co-authored a series of geologic quadrangle maps of Taos County,
has written a wide variety of books and articles on the geology of the
region, and has recently completed a study of the springs of the Rio
Grande gorge. In 2011, he published the award-winning book The Rio
Grande: A River Guide to the Geology and Landscapes of Northern New Mexico.

This talk is a boaters geo-photo-journey down the Rio Grande, with an
emphasis on the river hydrogeology and the evolution of the neighboring
landscape. It will include some thoughts on why the Rio Grande exists,
where it gets its water, and its remarkable system of springs. We will
also explore the geologic setting of rapids along the river, the fierce
combat between water and lava, and tidbits of riverside human history
such as gold mining and astronaut training.

Paul will be bringing some his books, so you may wish to bring a
checkbook or a little extra cash.

The meeting will be in the Crest 1 room that is just west of the lounge.
You may purchase drinks or food at the bar.

We can also share permit success (or not) stories.....
