A group from Abq (3 12' oared rafts and 4 kayakers) actually braved the low water this past week for the whole run (5 days on river). I haven't had a chance to hear their stories yet but the pictures I've seen looked like it was pretty hard on the rafts. Eye of the Needle was especially boney, but Eye of the Needle is not on the Day Run. I've only run it at 3000 - I bailed on this group's trip several weeks back 'cuz of the low water; to fit my 16' cat comfortably through the full trip my policy is no less than 1500 cfs. A smaller, raft can obviously run it at significantly lower water.

As Tim says: not even the weather knows what's going on this year. I dunno how far south today's storm went (or is still going?). It shut down 180 miles of I-40 around Flagstaff this morning. Could be well worth the drive to the Salt for at least the day run. There are cancellation permits for the Wilderness section available now. Me? I'm hanging on to what I can of the ski season. That said, Kirtland's commercial season starts ramping up next weekend at Pilar with the 'guide training season' starting up again. (I guide for Kirtland)

Skiing or rafting? Always a tough call come March in Northern NM. Then again, life's nothing if not filled with possibilities!

I don't have a permit, but it might be nice to take a weekend and head down there to do the day run. Last I checked the Apache were charging $20/day. Anyone interested? It's about a 6 hour drive.
