This is a relatively short and well written article on what we know and don't know regarding sunscreens.  It reports on  articles from JAMA and others.  I enjoyed it and found it not only refreshing, but informative.

It isn't just SPF but also broad spectrum, to block UVA and UVB rays.  Again, from the website above: "There are two kinds of UV rays – UVA and UVB. Each penetrates your skin differently. The SPF rating only refers to UVB rays."
Some info I saw said the current FDA rules are outdated; a new set seems to be in the works.  Euro rules are stricter, so looking for a product that meets those rules might be a good approach too.

I usually use a sheer or ultralight, broad spectrum sunscreen because it seems to interfere less with sweating.  Like CeraVe or Neutrogena, in a SPF30.  

 https://www.ewg.org/sunscreen/  address your toxicity concern a bit Hawke, but they have so many choices it was kinda overwhelming.  Plus I couldn't find much on the toxicity concerns past that they were identified.

I would like to probe the New Mexico cycling hive mind about sunscreen. I have used bullfrog for years, but am a bit concerned about it being somewhat toxic. I find with zinc oxide only sunscreens I tend to wipe them off getting sweat out of my eyes, and then get sunburned anyway. I got some chemical and zinc oxide sunscreen from Target and it seems to interfere with the sweating/cooling process. Do you have a favorite you might recommend?
