[NMCycling] WTF is wrong with this world????

I cannot agree more on how the parents share a huge amount of responsibility for this tragedy.   Though, I strongly believe that each one knew what they were doing, they made adult choices and should face adult consequences.
I worked in the same building as Scott and we often passed as ships in the morning, he was coming into work and I was leaving.  The Labs, my division graciously gave Scott's family a private tour of our facility so that they could get a taste of what he did in service to our nation.  I assisted Jennifer and Dave H in the Ghost Bike dedication.  Scott was just months away from a well earned retirement.  Were I to say that his immediate family is beyond devastated by his loss.  At work I know we are still in mourning.  Personally I feel that the kids involved are so morally corrupt that they are past the point of any reprogramming or remediation.   They should all be serving very lengthy jail sentences and if I have anything to do with it I will assist in anyway possible.
I know that from when I was run over, backed over and run over again I still hear the sounds of the whole incident like it was yesterday.  The person who hit me and held other people across town hostage at gun point that day never ever had the weight of the law come down on him. Yet every few years I see how he goes up in front of a judge on domestic violence charges and each time he walks away...

Agreed. The parents of these three kids have some huge responsibilities to confront. This has ruined their kids' lives since now all three of them have a lot of penance to confront and rehabilitation to go through. It's a complete reprogramming (hopefully) that will put them on a better path someday in the future. The odds are stacked against them now, however.

There should not be any sympathy (appropriately, of course) towards those kids until they fully understand the gravity of what they did. It's going to take a lot of rehabilitation to get there.

What messed up set of circumstances. I am just sick about the grief that family must be enduring.

This is a parenting issue.  You either teach, model, and hold accountable or you don't.  Doesn't erase the pain and trauma of the family of the victim.  But let's face it, society is a big mess right now.

The other issue is that the parents should be held liable for the kid’s actions as well. I don’t think a society should be putting children to death, but I do think parents must assume liability for kids-especially with guns not secured by parents, cars not secured, etc. Of course the kids should lose their freedom and spend much of their lives repaying the family of the deceased. Our laws must change. But killing kids is not the answer.
Really it is representative of a wider problem of dangerous driving, lack of punishment for breaking the law, etc. I am convinced that if people knew they would get ticketed for speeding, for cheating on their tax return, and other smaller crimes that it would be a deterrent to bigger crimes. There really is a reason to support law and order without becoming an authoritarian state.

Based on back stories I have learned through the ghost bike efforts I think the trauma those children wrought on the Habermehl family goes through them, back one or more generation.

It is so sad in every aspect.

These three punks used a stolen car to PURPOSELY hit a man riding his bicycle to work at Sandia National Labs (so, somebody that had worked hard on an education and did important work for the country, he was about 11 months older than me and had a PhD in physics).

They were 15, 13, and 11 years old (13yo driving)

The 11yo was “waving a gun and laughing during the crash”, but he is “too young to be charged with murder” (in NM you have to be at least 14).  I say if you are old enough to kill and carry a gun, then you are old enough to die.

Luckily these geniuses were smart enough to video and post their crime.

And they can’t find the 11yo and the 15yo?!?!?!?!  I guess they aren’t at home with their parents????

I really like Albuquerque and do not want to leave the weather, mountains, bike trails, etc.  But, we need a good tidal wave to clean out all the human feces that have been allowed to waste perfectly good oxygen here.  I absolutely can’t believe this!  Why aren’t we all rising up and crashing the courts, demanding these little pricks be executed?  Why do we have to be nice and follow the law?  If we don’t fight back, these prick will continue to ruin lives and cities!

Craig, soon to be an ex New Mexican.
