Today, League of Women Voters Central New Mexico, will meet to discuss
Ranked Choice Voting.  In New Mexico, voters in two cities, Santa Fe and
Las Cruces, have used Ranked Choice Voting in their city elections for
Mayor and City Councilors.  The election for Mayor in Santa Fe had five
candidates running and in Las Cruces, there were 11 candidates.  In both
elections the run off elections which take candidates and voters time
and cost the taxpayers money were not needed.

While it is nice to learn about how Ranked Choice Voting works in the
state of Maine, the issue today really deals with whether the League of
Women Voters Central New Mexico should take a position on Ranked Choice
Voting to encourage the City of Albuquerque should adopt Ranked Choice
Voting.

For those interested in the longer term processes of Ranked Choice
Voting, consider the experience in Australia which has been using, and
refining the process, of Ranked Choice Voting for many years...more than
100.

In addition, last Fall, I was asked to head a program for our August
meeting on Ranked Choice Voting.  Yesterday Mayor Tim Keller agreed to
present the PRO side of Ranked Choice Voting.  I have sent out an
invitation to another speaker to take the NO side. More on this program
in the future.
