This year New Mexico will draw new districts for Congress, the state
legislature and other statewide offices, based on information from the 2020
U.S. Census.

Current law allows the state legislature to draw the districts. The League
of Women Voters of New Mexico is leading a grassroots effort to convince the
legislature to allow the districts to be drawn by an independent
redistricting commission. Dick Mason, the Advocacy Chair for the League of
Women Voters of New Mexico is the point person for the league.

At this time the New Mexico House of Representatives, and the state senate
have democratic majorities and the governor is a democrat. That gives the
democrats great power in determining how the districts are drawn.

Learn more about redistricting on Thursday, January 7 at 2 p.m. when Fair
Districts New Mexico, a coalition of good government groups, presents
information about a proposed redistricting bill that will be introduced in
the coming session of the New Mexico legislature.

This is a zoom meeting. <https://us02web.zoom.us/j/89726218511#success>

You can get much more information about redistricting at
<http://www.fairdistrictsnm.org/> Fair Districts New Mexico. That includes a
surprisingly honest video of two senators discussing what really happens
during a statewide redistricting. This is a painless way to learn about a
major league priority for the upcoming legislative session.
