Laura,

Thank you for your question about book club recommendations on this topic,
and for your patience with my reply as I'm away on vacation. Our panelists
recommend the following, and I've included links to read more or purchase.

Justin's recommendation:

   1. Desmond Meade, *Let My People Vote
   <https://bookshop.org/p/books/let-my-people-vote-my-battle-to-restore-the-civil-rights-of-returning-citizens-desmond-meade/15023129?ean=9780807007341>*.
This is Meade's autobiography and his detailed campaign about
how restoring the civil rights of ex-felons will lower rates of recidivism.
   2020.

Douglas's recommendations:

   1. Michelle Alexander, *The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age
   of Colorblindness
   <https://bookshop.org/p/books/the-new-jim-crow-mass-incarceration-in-the-age-of-colorblindness-anniversary-michelle-alexander/594237?ean=9781620971932>*
--
this book changed the national conversation on incarceration when it was
published. A tenth anniversary edition was published in 2020. Buy here.
   2. Emily Bazelon, *Charged: The New Movement to Transform American
   Prosecution and End Mass Incarceration
   <https://bookshop.org/p/books/charged-the-new-movement-to-transform-american-prosecution-and-end-mass-incarceration-emily-bazelon/11376337?ean=9780399590030>*
-- discusses the important role prosecutors play in these issues, which is
   often forgotten. 2020.
   3. Paul Butler, *Chokehold: Policing Black Men. A Renegade Prosecutor's
Radical Thoughts on How to Disrupt the System
   <https://bookshop.org/p/books/chokehold-policing-black-men-paul-butler/594524?ean=9781620974834>*
-- the focus here is particularly on Black men and the criminal justice
   system. 2018.
   4. James Forman, Jr., *Locking Up Our Own: Crime and Punishment in Black
   Americ*a
   <https://bookshop.org/p/books/locking-up-our-own-crime-and-punishment-in-black-america-james-forman/8487720?ean=9780374537449>
-- written by a former PD, now law professor, it looks at the support for
many of the tough on crime laws that led to mass incarceration from leaders
in the Black community. 2018. Pulitzer Prize winner.
   5. Badley Balko, *The Rise of the Warrior Cop: The Militarization of
   America's Police Forces
   <https://bookshop.org/p/books/rise-of-the-warrior-cop-the-militarization-of-america-s-police-forces-radley-balko/11487752?ean=9781541774537>
*-- it tells the story of how our police became armies, written by a
libertarian at the Cato Institute, which makes its arguments even more
striking. Balko is the best reporter in the country on over-policing. 2021.

Bookshop.org is the online store I've provided links to above, as I prefer
to purchase with them over Amazon when possible because their mission is to
connect readers with independent bookstores around the world. When they're
out of stock, they partner with Biblio, so you can click any of the options
underneath their 'Backorder' link to buy the book now from a Biblio indie
bookstore instead. Books on this site are also often equal to or less than
the cost of those sold on Amazon.

Let me know if you need anything further.
